StopTheSpot Youth Organization Background information
StopTheSpot Youth Organization is the organization founded by University of Venda student who is doing 4th year level under school of education Ms. Raphalalani Avhasei Messie. What motivated Avhasei to start this initiative is challenges that she faced when growing up. As a rural girl she was sexually abused at the age of 8, faced teenage pregnancy, failure in both academics and life, how family background can affect one’s academics life. And she could not get help because she grew up in a rural area called Tshipako Village where she could not access social development help. Due to that she saw the need to help other children from South Africa who are between the age of 6 -25 years who stay at underprivileged areas, starting from Limpopo province, under Thulamela and LIM 345 municipalities. “why do we have to wait for government to bring changes to the underprivileged areas, while we can do it by ourselves through community engagement? What is StopTheSpot Youth Organization?
SYO is the community engagement project that helps children from the age of 6 up to 25 who comes from underprivileged areas with motivation about education, health awareness and social development. We aim to protect and encourage children to focus on positive behavior and to make every girl feel comfortable on their special days. We found that natural process of menstruation comes as a big problem to girls who are from underprivileged areas, some uses tree leaves, old clothes, toilet papers and newspapers because they cannot afford to buy pads. This organization is divided into two programs, namely program 1 Primary program and program 2 Secondary program.
Program 1
We visit the primary schools at underprivileged areas to talk about education, health and social development of the learners. What made us to choose to go to primary schools to motivate younger children is because for instance if a child is being sexual abused it is better to get help on early stage because it becomes easier for a child to accept the situation when going through therapists. We do all that with the aim to identify, prevent and stop sexual abuse, prepare them for secondary schools, teach them about importance of cleanliness, and prepare them for everyday life.
Program 2
We also visit different secondary schools motivating learners about sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy, early sex, STI and HIV/AIDS, study methods, giving them hope about their future, family backgrounds vs academics, how to choose careers, tertiaries and subjects, the importance of circumcision to boys and we also distribute free sanitary towels to underprivileged girls. What we do is that we go to certain schools and request total number of girls who comes from underprivileged homes and provide them with sanitary towels every month.
